Children's vision: myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism
Short-sightedness
Normal vision
Why children's eyesight requires special attention
  • Special compensation mechanisms – a child's eye can "mask" violations, and problems go unnoticed without examination.
  • High risk of progression – myopia and astigmatism may worsen faster than in adults.
  • Early diagnosis is critical – timely detection of disorders allows you to stop progress and improve vision.
  • Special methods of control and therapy – there are procedures available only to children that help correct vision and develop binocular perception.
Methods of diagnosis and treatment of children's visual impairments
It is especially important for children not just to "check their eyesight", but to fully evaluate how the eyes work together and how vision develops.
  • Diagnostics
Objective: to identify myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, amblyopia ("lazy eye") or strabismus at an early stage.

    What is checked and how:
Visual acuity is a standard test of how clearly a child sees at different distances.
Refraction – measures how the eye refracts (focuses) light; helps to understand whether glasses or lenses are needed.
    o Devices: autorefractometer, retinoscope
Binocular vision is a test of how both eyes work together (coordination of movements, depth perception).
    Devices: synoptophore, pleoptic simulators
Stereo vision – determines how the brain sees the volume and distance to objects.
Tests: stereo tests with anaglyph glasses, computer programs
Amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus are special tests for detecting a weakened eye and impaired coordination.
Diagnostic time: usually 40-60 minutes, because not only the "number" of vision is checked, but also the work of the eyes together, the strength of accommodation (the ability of the eye to focus) and the reaction to different loads.
  • Optical correction
Purpose: to provide clear vision and reduce eye strain.

    Options:
    • Glasses
    • Progressive lenses – smooth transition between far and near focus to see clearly at all distances (for older children or teenagers).
    • Bifocal lenses – a zone for long-range vision + a zone for reading.
    • An example of adaptation time: 1-2 weeks, the brain gets used to the transition between zones.
    Contact lenses
    • Toric lenses – for children with astigmatism (visual distortion due to the irregular shape of the cornea or lens).
    • Multifocal lenses – correct both near and far vision, often used in a combination of astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related hyperopia, usually in adolescents 14+).
    • The period of adaptation: the first days to 1 week, the brain learns to choose the right focus.
    Combined solutions
    • For example, contact lenses + glasses for reading or computer work.
    • It is individually tailored to the child's workload (school, gadgets, sports).
  • Hardware treatment and visual therapy
    • The goal: to develop eye coordination, stimulate the "weak" eye and improve binocular vision.

    Examples of methods and devices:
    • Synoptophor is a simulator for coordinating eye muscles and improving stereo vision (volume and distance vision).
    • Amblyocore is a computer program that stimulates the weak eye through visual and audio signals.
    • Pleoptic exercises – games and workouts to activate the "lazy eye".
    • Light stimulation / Accommodation simulators – Improves focus and the ability of the eyes to work together.
    • Terms of treatment and training:
    • Usually from 3 to 12 months, depending on the age of the child and the degree of impairment.
    • Classes are held regularly 2-5 times a week under the supervision of a doctor.
  • Dynamics control
    • Purpose: to monitor the progress of treatment and adjust the methods if necessary.

    • In children with myopia or astigmatism — every 1-3 months
    • In stable condition — every 6 months
    • Monitoring helps you change glasses, lenses, or therapy in time to stop the progression.
